The first Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed standard

The first Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed standard was adopted in 1989. It was signed by Mr. Werner Biewer – the author of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed. The standard was brief and concise: the representatives of this breed were described as Yorkshire Terriers with a color combination of white, blue and gold.

Many breeders were intrigued by these small dogs and then started breeding them as well. Among the first kennel which started the reproduction were “Agridesheim” and “Sonnenhof”.

The Biewer family retained direct control of the breeding program in Germany. Biewer Yorkshire Terriers were high-breed and quite expensive.

Werner Biewer died in 1997, but the work of his life continues thanks to the existence of a unique breed named in his honor.

After 10 years, or rather, on November 02, 2007, the second breed standard was adopted. It was signed by Mrs. Gertrude Biewer.

It already had more detailed description of how a Biewer Yorkshire Terrier should look like.

The main external features of the Biewer Yorkie were listed as a long, thick coat, a small head, which is not convex or round in shape, pronounced black pigment on the nose and eyelids, the eyes of medium size with an intelligent expression, small V-shaped ears, long hair on the muzzle.

According to the standard, the neck of a Biewer should be of medium length and not very muscled.

The body is supposed to be compact with a strong and straight topline and a well-formed lower back.

The legs of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier should be straight and covered with thick hair.

The tail should also be covered with thick hair and carried slightly above the topline.

The coat of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier should be smooth and straight.

The color of the Biewer, according to the standard, can be white-black-gold or white-blue-gold.

The head of a Biewer Yorkie must be dyed in three colors white-black-gold or white-blue-gold in a good ratio.

The body of the Biewer should be white-black or white-blue. Nothing was said in the standard about the percentage proportions of color and the predominance of one or another color. Therefore, everyone chose for himself the phenotype and the color that he liked.

In the breed standard adopted in 2007, the size of the Biewer Yorkie was also fixed. Its height must not exceed 22 cm at the withers and its weight must not exceed 3.1 kg. For females, the standard assumed that their weight could vary in the range of 3.1-3.6. Males must comply with the standard weight.

By the 2000s, Biewers had lost their popularity in Germany and the number of breeders significantly decreased. The former success returned only with the advent of representatives of the beautiful Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed in the USA.

At the moment, FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), of which UKU (Ukrainian Kennel Union) is a full-fledged member, has allowed the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed to be recognized at the national level in countries where the representative offices of this organization are located. Thanks to this rule Biewer Yorkies can attend dog shows, get grades and close champion titles in some EU countries, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia. The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed at CAC and CACIB rank shows take part in the “Out of FCI classification” group. Judging of the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier breed in the rings is carried out by experts, mostly by All-rounders, or those who have this breed opened.

In February 2019, the American Breed Standard was adopted in the United States. According to this standard the breed is called Biewer Terrier. This standard more detailed describes the requirements for representatives of the breed and disqualifying signs. In general, American standard described a beautiful high-pedigree dog, with the correct proportions of the body, previously described color and temperament.

Our kennel in breeding always follows the standard adopted by the founders of this beautiful breed. We also take into account the requirements for the breed prescribed in the American standard.

Our dogs are the heirs of purebred dogs born in Germany. Because of linear breeding with a minimum addition of other bloodlines, we preserve the most correct, pedigree, recognizable type. We are closely monitoring the maintenance of good health, genetically transmitted to our Biewers from their ancestors.
